The Country and Its People
Discover the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
Here at the heart of Europe, you can find both reminders of history and signs of progress, secluded areas and cosmopolitan life. Picturesque villages, mighty fortresses, idyllic meandering streets, modern banking houses: the Grand Duchy is full of contrasts.
Another feature which characterises Luxembourg is the fact that its inhabitants speak several languages. In addition to the two official languages – French and German – the local dialect, which is called “Lëtzebuergesch”, has become firmly established among the citizens of Luxembourg.
The history of the City of Luxembourg spans more than a thousand years. In the past twenty years, the capital of the Grand Duchy has become one of the most significant international financial centres. In addition, Luxembourg is also the seat of important European institutions such as the European Court of Justice and the Secretariat-General of the European Parliament.
The northern part of Luxembourg
Wide-ranging tree-covered plateaus, small towns that have a charm all of their own, and medieval castles: you will find all of this in the Ardennes Mountains in the northern part of Luxembourg.
Enjoy the idyllic countryside on long walks through forests and villages.
Nature lovers will get their money’s worth when they visit the Obersauer nature reserve, which combines the areas of five local authorities. The beautiful landscape of the nature reserve invites visitors to relax. And its lakes offer you the opportunity to practise any water sports you fancy.
The eastern part of Luxembourg
The eastern part of Luxembourg, which is also called Luxembourg’s Switzerland or Müllerthal, is characterised by rugged rock formations and woodlands with romantic rivers. It comprises large parts of the German-Luxembourg Nature Reserve.
In the midst of this natural landscape, you will find the medieval town of Echternach. This small picturesque town, which is famous for its Benedictine abbey and the annual dancing procession held on Whit Tuesday, is the ideal starting point for exploring the Müllerthal region.
The western part of Luxembourg
The Eisch Valley is located in the western part of Luxemburg, in the immediate vicinity of the capital. The country’s most famous castles can be found in this scenic environment in the midst of meadows and woodlands.
The castles of Mersch, Septfontaines and Ansembourg are just a few examples of the large number of impressive monuments that bear witness to the past.
The southern part of Luxembourg
In the land of the red soil, visitors will discover the source of Luxembourg’s prosperity. Old opencast mines and deserted quarries are evidence of the ore mines of past centuries. It is impressive to see how nature has reclaimed its own. Nature lovers will be fascinated by the rare animals and plants found in this region.
It is also worth paying a visit to Mondorf-les-Bains, a very special health resort that offers not only mineral springs and sauna facilities but also a varied programme of cultural activities.
